Understanding Trauma-Informed Care
By Dr Priya Nair · 9 April 2026 · 8 min read
Trauma-informed care recognises how common trauma is and how deeply it can affect a person's life. Rather than asking 'what's wrong with you?', it asks 'what happened to you?'.
The six principles
- Safety — physical and emotional
- Trustworthiness and transparency
- Peer support
- Collaboration and mutuality
- Empowerment, voice and choice
- Cultural, historical and gender sensitivity
Why it matters
Applying these principles helps avoid re-traumatisation, builds trust, and supports recovery — across clinical, educational and community settings alike.
